Demographers

Outlook

Employment for sociologists, a profession related to demographers, is expected to grow faster than the average for all careers from 2023 through 2033, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). Job opportunities for statisticians (another related career) are expected to grow 11 percent during this same time span, much faster than the average for all careers. The DOL reports that "growth is expected to result from more widespread use of statistical analysis to inform business, healthcare, and policy decisions."

Demographers with the most training and greatest amount of education, preferably a Ph.D., should find the best job prospects. Employment opportunities should be greatest in and around large metropolitan areas, where many colleges, universities, research facilities, and federal agencies are located. Individuals with statistical training will have an advantage.

Demographers have many transferable skills (i.e., information gathering and data analysis) that make them attractive candidates for employment at corporations and in other settings. This increases their employment options if the job market slows in their current field.
