Traveling Nurses

High School

In high school, take courses in health, mathematics, psychology, and science (including biology and chemistry). Computer science classes will be useful because nurses use computers to record patient data, to complete continuing education courses, and for other purposes. Nurses need strong communication skills, so be sure to also take speech, English, and foreign language classes.    

Postsecondary Education

Aspiring registered nurses can prepare for the field by earning an associate’s degree, diploma, or bachelor’s degree. Many colleges and universities offer bachelor’s degree programs in nursing. Graduates receive a bachelor of science in nursing. The associate degree in nursing is awarded after completion of a two-year study program that is usually offered by a junior or community college. Diploma programs, which usually last three years, are offered by hospitals and independent schools. Students who complete an associate’s degree, diploma, or bachelor’s degree program must then pass a licensing examination. They are then known as registered nurses. Nurses who have earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing typically have more opportunities in travel nursing than those who have only completed an associate’s degree or diploma program in nursing.

Nurses and nursing students can also take classes or complete minors or concentrations that allow them to specialize in areas such as geriatric, surgical, or rehabilitation nursing.  

Nurse anesthetists, nurse practitioners, and nurse midwives typically need at least a master’s degree in an advanced practice nursing field.

Certification

Many colleges and universities offer certificate programs in general nursing and nursing specialty areas. Programs typically last six months to a year and are available in online, in-person, and hybrid formats. Contact schools in your area for information about available programs.

Other Education or Training

Participating in continuing education (CE) classes is a great way to keep your skills up to date, and CE credits may also be required to renew one’s certification.
