Traveling Nurses

Experience, Skills, and Personality Traits

You will need at least 12 to 18 months of experience as a registered nurse to qualify for most positions. Applicants for advanced traveling nurse positions may need significantly more experience.

All nurses need strong communication and interpersonal skills (including a friendly and positive demeanor), confidence, and the ability to be a team player, but these skills are especially important for traveling nurses. Traveling nurses need to “hit the ground running” to work effectively with existing staff once they begin their assignments. Flexibility and adaptability are other key traits because traveling nurses may work in several different healthcare settings and cities in the space of a year. They also work with a frequently-changing group of colleagues and managers. Other important traits include time management and organizational skills and an excellent work-ethic.
