Unions and Associations

Some registered nurses are represented by National Nurses United; the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees; and other national and local unions.

Professional nursing associations—such as the American Nurses Association, American Society of Registered Nurses, American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners—offer useful resources such as membership, networking events, publications, training opportunities, and certification. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing represents more than 875 member schools of nursing; these schools offer a mix of baccalaureate, graduate, and post-graduate programs. The American Nurses Credentialing Center, along with many other nursing organizations, provides certification to registered nurses. The National Organization for Associate Degree Nursing describes itself as the “voice for associate degree nursing.” The American Assembly for Men in Nursing seeks to encourage to enter nursing. It offers a membership category for high school students. The National Student Nurses’ Association offers educational and career resources.
