Biomedical Engineers

Outlook

There will be good demand for skilled biomedical engineers in the future. Prospects look particularly strong in the health care industry, which will continue to grow rapidly, primarily because people are living longer and require better medical devices and equipment. The U.S. Department of Labor predicts that employment for biomedical engineers will increase by 5 percent from 2022 through 2032. This is faster than the average for all careers. New jobs will become available in biomedical research in prosthetics, biotechnology, pharmaceutical manufacturing and related industries (especially in cost-management settings), the development of artificial internal organs, computer applications, and instrumentation and other medical systems. Three-dimensional printing, smartphones, augmented and virtual reality, and other technologies have created new job opportunities as the industry uses them in conjunction with medical equipment and devices.

Graduates with a bachelor's degree will face stiff competition for entry-level jobs. Thus, people entering this field are strongly encouraged to pursue a graduate degree to increase their job prospects.
