Biomedical Engineers

Work Environment

Biomedical engineers who teach in a university will have regular student contact in the classroom, the laboratory, and the office. They also will be expected to serve on relevant committees while continuing their teaching, research, and writing responsibilities. As competition for teaching positions increases, the requirement that professors publish papers will increase. Professors usually are responsible for obtaining government or private research grants to support their work.

Those who work in industry and government work closely with other professionals, including chemists, medical scientists, biomedical engineering technicians, other engineers, and doctors. They often work as part of a team, testing and developing new products. All biomedical engineers who do lab work are in clean, well-lighted environments, using cutting-edge technology.
