Employment Prospects

Employers

Approximately 49,450 writers and authors (including bloggers) are employed in the United States. They are self-employed or work for newspaper, magazine, and other publishers; Web sites; corporations; nonprofit organizations; government agencies; advertising and marketing firms; and any other organization that has a blog.

Starting Out

Most bloggers break into the field by starting their own blogs and trying to attract readers. Others work as reporters, writers, and editors for media companies or advertising and marketing firms and blog part time for their companies or on their own.

In 2012, there were an estimated 31 million bloggers in the United States, and 60 percent of businesses had a company blog, according to information at blogging.org, a content marketing and blogging Web site. By 2022, the number of blogs worldwide had swelled to more than 600 million, according to a May 2023 WebTribunal article.
