Certification, Licensing, and Special Requirements

Certification or Licensing

Clinical data managers may receive the designation certified clinical data manager from the Society for Clinical Data Management. Certification shows employers that managers have achieved a standard of knowledge, education, and experience that is recognized in the field. To be eligible for certification, candidates must pass the certification examination and meet one of the following educational/experience qualifications:

  • have an associate's degree and at least three years of full-time experience
  • have a bachelor's degree and a minimum of two years of full-time experience
  • have no degree, but have four or more years of full-time experience as a clinical data manager
  • part-time work experience equal to or surpassing full-time equivalent in the above criteria

Other associations that provide certification for data management professionals include TDWI, the Institute for Certification of Computing Professionals, DAMA International, and INFORMS. Contact these organizations for more information.
