Exploring This Job

Opportunities for high school students to explore this field are limited. You may, however, contact people in this field to request information interviews or job shadowing experiences, which are excellent ways to learn about different careers.

Hone your math skills outside of the classroom by joining your high school math team or by volunteering as a math tutor at your school or a local learning center. You can also improve your business and accounting skills by joining a school group that has a yearly budget and offering to be the treasurer. This will give you the opportunity to be responsible for an organization's financial records.

Try landing a summer job performing clerical tasks for accounting or law firms. This experience can help you become familiar with the documentation necessary in both fields. When in college, you should seek internships with accounting firms in order to gain practical experience and to make contacts within the industry.
