Genetic counselors earned median annual salaries of $95,770 in May 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Salaries ranged from less than $72,530 to $132,190 or more. Those who were employed by general and medical surgical hospitals had mean annual salaries of $96,140, while those who worked in medical and diagnostic laboratories earned $108,730.

In November 2024, the average salary for a full-time genetic counselor was $86,752, according to Salary.com, which reported that salaries ranged from $70,724 to $105,526 or more.

Genetic counselors who are employed by the private sector, such as HMOs or private hospitals, generally are paid more than those who work for university medical centers or public hospitals. Genetic counselors who work in a physician's private practice are paid only slightly less than those who work in private hospitals.
