Metallurgical Engineers

Exploring This Job

Taking sculpture and welding classes is a good way of learning the properties of metals. Creating bronze sculptures, designing and making metal jewelry, and welding metals into structures provides hands-on experience. Membership in the Technology Student Association (https://tsaweb.org) give students the opportunity to compete in academic events, take career exploration tests, and gain hands-on experience in engineering. In college, students may join student chapters of associations such as the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration.

Other excellent opportunities are found at summer camps and special academic programs. For example, Vanderbilt University offers pre-college summer programs for students interested in science and engineering. Find more information at https://admissions.vanderbilt.edu/prospective/precollege-programs.php. Additionally, if you're good at math and science and are interested in pursuing a major and career in engineering and/or materials science, you can participate in ASM Materials Camps for students, which are sponsored by ASM International. These free summer camps, which are held throughout the United States, provide a great opportunity to get firsthand experience in science and engineering.
