Retail Managers

Outlook

Employment of retail managers is expected to decline 5 percent through 2029. Retailers have reduced their management staff to cut costs and make operations more efficient. In early 2020, the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak had a major impact on every industry, including retailing, causing supply chain disruptions, temporary and permanent store closures, and layoffs. The economic fallout that accompanied the pandemic resulted in additional challenges for retailers.

However, there are still opportunities in retailing. These will be best in wholesale clubs, superstores, and discount department stores. Competition for all jobs will continue to be keen, however, and computerized systems for inventory control may reduce the need for some managers.

Applicants with the best educational backgrounds and work experience will have the best chances of finding jobs. There will always be a need for retail managers, however, as long as retail stores exist. Retail manager positions are rarely affected by corporate restructuring at retail headquarters; this has a greater impact on home office staff.
