Advancement Prospects

At a large law firm, company, or government agency, a new graduate will start as an associate, then advance to the position of supervisory attorney, then to managing attorney. After 10 or so years, a highly skilled managing attorney can advance to the position of general counsel, who runs the legal department. At a smaller employer, there will be fewer opportunities for advancement, although attorneys can continue to advance by receiving pay raises and performance bonuses. Some attorneys decide to launch their own law firms, while others choose to become law professors.
