Biotechnology Patent Lawyers

Earnings

In the law field, salaries tend to increase in predictable increments as the lawyer gains in experience and seniority. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median annual income for all lawyers was $145,760 in May 2023. The lowest paid 10 percent made less than $69,760 and the top 10 percent made more than $217,360. Higher salaries are generally found in major urban areas at large firms with 75 or more lawyers.

Because of the advanced training required and the high stakes of the biotech industry, biotechnology patent attorneys tend to earn about $10,000 to $20,000 more a year than their peers at each rung of this ladder. For example, while a starting attorney may earn about $75,000, a starting biotechnology patent attorney would make as much as $90,000. Other factors can also influence these numbers, however, including the degrees held by lawyers, the size of the firm, and the geographic location of the firm.

Most lawyers receive standard benefits from their employers, including health insurance and retirement plans.
