An increasing number of large companies are adding the position of chief sustainability officer, but it's important to remember that not every organization offers this position. With that said, companies will continue to need chief sustainability officers to help them reduce their carbon footprint and operate environmental programs that are in compliance with government regulations. Increasing efforts by companies to "go green" will spur demand for sustainability officers. Competition is keen for this position. Chief sustainability officers with an advanced degree and five or more years of management experience in sustainability will have the advantage in the job market.
