Electronics Service Technicians

Outlook

Slower than average employment growth is expected for audiovisual equipment installers and repairers and electrical and electronics installers and repairers through 2033, according to the Department of Labor. The need for repair of items such as high definition televisions and digital cameras is somewhat limited; the reason for this is partly the improving quality and durability of today's electronics products. As manufacturers find ways to make their products better, fewer and less frequent repairs are needed. Also, lower costs make it often more sensible for consumers to replace their malfunctioning equipment than to repair it. Rapidly evolving technologies mean that many consumer electronics products are obsolete by the time they begin to malfunction—and will be replaced by the latest new product. This spurs many consumers to simply move on to the most recent product rather than repair an existing one.

Despite slowing demand, there will still be opportunities for technicians who have good customer service skills, are certified, and who have a strong background in electronics repair. This is because there is a fairly high rate of turnover in the profession. Many service technicians leave their jobs to transfer to higher paying positions, such as servicing industrial or office equipment.
