Many energy consultants work for management consulting firms. Management consultants who worked for management, scientific, and technical consulting services firms had mean annual earnings of $121,500 in May 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Ten percent of all consultants earned less than $57,840, and 10 percent earned $172,280 or more. Those in the petroleum and coal production industry earned a mean annual wage of $143,710. Consultants who are paid by the hour can earn anywhere from $50 to more than $200 an hour.

Typical benefits for salaried consultants include health and life insurance, retirement plans, vacation and sick leave, profit sharing, and bonuses for outstanding work. Employers typically reimburse consultants for travel expenses. Self-employed consultants must provide their own benefits.
