Energy Consultants

Work Environment

A typical day for an energy consultant involves a combination of time in his or her home office and time visiting clients’ offices or field sites (such as wind farms, oil rigs, or coal mines). Consultants typically work long hours. Most consultants work more than 40 hours per week. If a project is close to its deadline, consultants sometimes work 14- to 16-hour days, and six- or seven-day workweeks are fairly common.

Energy consultants typically work in small project teams, although they are also expected to work independently. This job can be stressful because of constant deadlines and high expectations of clients. On the other hand, most energy consultants view their jobs as intellectually stimulating and ever changing, and they enjoy the collaborative nature of the profession.

Self-employed consultants have much more latitude regarding work assignments and schedule, and although being your own boss can be rewarding, self-employed consultants experience stress from having to manage staff while maintaining and expanding their clientele on their own.
