Outlook

Opportunities in artificial intelligence (including machine learning) will be excellent during the next decade. “AI experts have become some of the most in-demand and best-paid talent in today’s technological marketplace,” according to Beatriz Remeseiro, assistant professor in the Computer Science Department at the University of Oviedo, Spain, who was interviewed about the field by Science. Each year, LinkedIn spotlights the careers that have emerged recently and that are experiencing “tremendous growth.” Its 2020 Emerging Jobs Report identified 15 fast-growing careers. The following machine learning–related jobs were featured in the report: artificial intelligence specialist (ranked #1), data scientist (#3), data engineer (#8), cybersecurity specialist (#10), and cloud engineer (#13). Robert Half Technology, an IT staffing firm, included machine learning engineers, artificial intelligence specialists, data specialists, cloud computing specialists, Internet of Things specialists, business intelligence analysts, and IT security specialists on its list of technology careers that are in strong demand. Industries where demand is strongest for these professionals include health care, financial services, technology, and manufacturing and distribution. Machine learning engineers with advanced degrees and who stay up-to-date with continuing advances in the field will have the best job prospects.
