Machine Learning Engineers

Outlook

Opportunities in artificial intelligence (including machine learning) will be excellent during the next decade. “AI experts have become some of the most in-demand and best-paid talent in today’s technological marketplace,” according to Beatriz Remeseiro, associate professor in the Computer Science Department at the University of Oviedo, Spain, who was interviewed about the field by Science. LinkedIn periodically spotlights careers that have emerged recently and that are experiencing the "fastest growth.” In 2024, it included the following ML–related careers in its list: artificial intelligence (AI) consultant (ranked #8) and AI engineer (#10).

Robert Half, a staffing firm, included AI and machine learning on its list of top, in-demand skills, according to its Technology Salaries and Hiring Trends: 2025 Salary Guide. "Proficiency in AI remains the most highly sought skill by tech and IT teams for needs ranging from customer chatbots to predictive maintenance systems," according to Robert Half. It also reports that 44 percent of technology managers who it surveyed said that they increased starting salaries for candidates with skills in AI and machine learning—the top skill cited. Industries where demand is strongest for these professionals include health care, financial services, technology, government, and manufacturing, and professional services. Machine learning engineers with advanced degrees and who stay up-to-date with continuing advances in the field will have the best job prospects.
