A network operations center is typically configured as a large room with rows of workstations with small monitors that face a wall of large monitors that provide real-time information on the performance of the network. Some large companies and government agencies have several NOCs—either to manage different networks or to provide a backup site in case one site becomes unavailable.
Network operations centers are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so the work is shift-oriented. New hires are often required to work night and weekend shifts until they gain seniority.
This career will not be a good fit for those who like an active physical work environment. NOC technicians often sit for long periods of time as they monitor systems and respond to issues.
Seventy-eight percent of NOC technicians reported being “highly satisfied” with their careers, according to a 2024 survey by PayScale.com.
