Space Tourism Managers

The Job

Since this is such a new field, job responsibilities for space tourism managers vary greatly by employer. Some managers work with executives, engineers, and marketing professionals to design a space tourism program from scratch and deal with everything from spacecraft design and user experience, to risk management assessments, to sales, marketing, and financial modeling. Others improve or expand existing programs. Some managers focus on one aspect of the process. For example, a customer experience program manager works closely with engineers, user interface designers, and other members of the technical team to ensure that a superior customer experience is provided pre-flight, in-flight, and post-flight. A manager at another company will focus on business development and work with other commercial space companies to offer space tourism opportunities to customers. Another manager will develop pricing models and marketing campaigns, while others design and implement training programs that educate space tourists and keep them safe during their experience.

In the future, space tourism managers will be tasked with managing the customer experience at space hotels, conducting research to identify new space tourism opportunities (such as traveling to Mars or near a comet), and developing financial models and marketing strategies that will allow those from lower income levels to enjoy the space tourism experience.
