Some traffic engineers may be members of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers, American Federation of Government Employees, and other unions. The Institute of Transportation Engineers is the leading professional membership organization for traffic engineers. It provides certification, members-only networking opportunities, continuing education classes, publications, and other resources. Other noteworthy organizations for traffic engineers include the American Society of Highway Engineers, American Public Transportation Association, and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. The U.S. Department of Transportation is a federal agency that seeks to “ensure a fast, safe, efficient, accessible and convenient transportation system that meets our vital national interests and enhances the quality of life of the American people, today and into the future.”
