Traffic Engineers

Exploring This Job

Talk to traffic engineers about their careers. Ask them what they like and dislike about their jobs and for advice on preparing for and landing a job in the field. If you're in college, join a student chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers to see if a career in transportation engineering is a good fit for you.

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) offers free membership for college civil engineering students, and they receive access to mentoring, competitions, and other resources. For high school students, the ASCE offers a Chat With a Civil Engineer program, which allows students to arrange a video or email conversation with an engineer. It also offers an extensive career section for students on its Web site, https://www.asce.org/career-growth/students.
