Experience, Skills, and Personality Traits

Employers typically hire job candidates who have one of three educational and experience backgrounds:

  • high school diploma or associate’s degree and extensive on-the-job experience in interaction design in lower-level jobs
  • bachelor’s degree or higher with an internship or other experiential education experience in interaction design
  • military software development training, with extensive training and/or experience in interaction design

Key traits for interaction designers include strong verbal and visual presentation skills; the ability to work both effectively as a member of a team but also independently, when necessary; flexibility and open-mindedness; patience; creativity; and excellent time-management, organizational; and problem-solving skills. In addition to soft skills, interaction designers must be knowledgeable about concept ideation, design strategy, and digital prototyping.
