In high school, take a college preparatory curriculum that includes classes in mathematics (including algebra, calculus, geometry, and trigonometry), physics, chemistry, English, writing, speech, computer science (including computer-aided design, database management), shop, and general design.

Postsecondary Education

You will need a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering (mechanical, electrical, environmental, architectural), energy efficiency, green construction, or a related major to become a building performance diagnostician. Many BPDs also have experience in HVAC, plumbing/piping, electrical, lighting, instrumentation and controls, or building envelope systems. Some colleges offer master’s degrees in building performance and diagnostics.

Certification

The Building Performance Institute offers a building science principles certificate of knowledge to applicants who demonstrate their understanding of the field by taking and passing a 100-question online exam with a score of 70 percent or better. The institute also offers a healthy housing principles certificate program in which participants learn about and demonstrate factors in a home that can negatively impact occupant health. Visit https://www.bpi.org/certificates/building-science-principles for more information. Additionally, colleges and universities and online learning platforms offer a variety of certificate programs in engineering, architecture, and related fields that will help aspiring and current BPDs to build their knowledge and explore specialized topics.

Other Education or Training

The Building Performance Association offers online continuing education classes and learning opportunities at its annual conference. Professional development opportunities are also offered by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers; Association of Energy Engineers; U.S. Green Building Council; and other organizations.
