Building Performance Diagnosticians

Building performance diagnosticians must have a bachelor’s degree, plus experience in HVAC, plumbing/piping, electrical, lighting, instrumentation and controls, or building envelope systems. They also need knowledge of construction practices and building codes, green building experience, the ability to read blueprints and schematics, knowledge of applicable energy efficiency rating systems and design standards, a conceptual and practical understanding of renewable energy systems and building automation systems, and proficiency in the use of computer-aided design, energy simulation, and building information modeling software. Some employers require BPD candidates to have three to five years of experience in lower-level positions.

Diagnosticians need a detail-oriented, analytical personality; excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills (including the ability to explain building performance issues and solutions to homeowners in easy-to-understand language); strong ethics; good time-management ability; a willingness to continue to learn throughout their careers; and the ability to work well independently, as well as a member of a team.
