Read books and listen to podcasts about building performance topics. A good book is Principles of Sustainable Energy Systems, by Frank Kreith, et al. Additionally, the Building Performance Podcast is an interview series that covers a variety of issues in the high-performance building industry. Talk with a building performance diagnostician about the field. Ask the following questions, and try to come up with your own, too.

• What made you want to enter this career?
• What are the most important personal and professional traits for BPDs?
• What do you like and dislike about this career?
• How did you train for this field?
• Is certification important? If so, why?
• Any advice on breaking into the field?

Try to job shadow a BPD. This is an excellent way to learn how they identify and solve performance issues in a variety of settings. Ask your school counselor for help setting up a job shadowing experience.
