Cancer Exercise Specialists

Experience, Skills, and Personality Traits

Aspiring cancer exercise specialists should obtain hands-on experience with clients while in school. Additionally, any volunteer or part-time experience—or participation in an internship or clinical practicum in the office of a physical therapist or cancer exercise specialist—will provide a useful introduction to the field.

This job is a good fit for people who are kind, empathetic, compassionate, and excellent communicators (including having top-notch listening skills). Other important traits include strong analytical and problem-solving ability, a detail-oriented personality, enthusiasm, the ability to motivate others, and a willingness to continue to learn throughout one’s career. This is not a good career for those who are impatient and uncomfortable working with sick people.
