Cancer Exercise Specialists

History

Cancer has been a scourge to humans since the early days of civilization. Evidence of cancerous cells has been found in mummies in Egypt that date from 3000 BCE, according to the American Cancer Society. For thousands of years, physicians and healers have sought to cure this disease or at least slow its ravaging effects. In the last 50 years, groundbreaking treatments and therapies for cancer have prompted mortality rates for some cancers to decline, although cancer remains one of the leading causes of death around the world. In recent decades, researchers have discovered that exercise can be beneficial to cancer patients. “Physical activity can play an important role in cancer prevention and control,” according to an abstract of a 2019 article by medical doctors and PhDs in Rehabilitation Oncology. The abstract also touts the benefits of exercise for those with cancer: “For cancer survivors, an exercise prescription for moderate intensity aerobic and/or resistance exercise at least three times per week, 30 minutes/sessions, for at least eight to 12 weeks may consistently improve common treatment-related symptoms and side effects.” As a result of scientific research and the positive personal experiences of cancer patients who have utilized exercise regimens, demand has increased for specialized fitness, exercise physiology, and physical therapy professionals.
