Chief Strategy Officers

Experience, Skills, and Personality Traits

To become a CSO, you will need to have at least seven years of experience in lower-level strategy positions (ideally in those that include managerial responsibilities).

Chief strategy officers must have a wide range of subject knowledge, as well as strong interpersonal and communication skills, to work effectively with chief financial officers, chief information officers, chief marketing officers, human resources directors, sales directors, and others in executive-level positions. They also must be top-notch communicators because they frequently present their findings and recommendations via reports and presentations.

Other important traits for CSOs include creativity, adaptability, curiosity, the ability to “think outside the box,” strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work as a member of a team.
