Chief Strategy Officers

The Job

Chief strategy officers have many job duties, but strategic plan development and implementation, market analysis, and change management are three of their main responsibilities.

Strategic plan development and implementation: The CSO works with the CEO, other executives, board members, and others to develop a strategic plan (e.g., creating a new customer relationship management program, developing an entirely new product line, rebranding an entire company) and then implementing it by explaining it to various stakeholders in the company, establishing an execution plan, and setting goals, metrics, and time-linked milestones. They also hold weekly or monthly progress-tracking meetings that identify potential roadblocks to keep the strategic initiative moving.

Market analysis: While working on new strategic initiatives, CSOs regularly review customer data and feedback, potential emerging markets for their company’s products and services, potential new revenue streams for their company, industry trends, possible risks to company success (including competitive threats), and other information to identify new opportunities (e.g., strategic partnerships, collaborations, mergers, acquisitions) and avoid potential roadblocks to company success.

Change management: The CSO serves as a prime mover regarding organizational transformation. They ensure that strategic plans are being implemented in a way that align with the company’s short- and long-term goals and values, as well as allow for scalability and growth. They also serve as a mediator between the CEO and various departments (which may not have completely “bought in” to the new initiative). The CSO ensures that everyone is working toward the same goal, that valid concerns are addressed, and each department has the resources it needs to stay on track.
