Back-end developers earned salaries that ranged from $64,000 to $144,000 in 2024, according to PayScale.com. They received a median annual salary of $98,332. Highly experienced and skilled developers can earn more than $200,000 a year.
Some developers receive bonuses, access to profit-sharing programs, and other non-salary–related financial awards. In 2024, back-end developers received bonuses that ranged from $292 to $15,000 and profit-sharing awards of up to $5,000, according to PayScale.com
Back-end developers who are employed full time usually receive benefits such as vacation days, sick leave, health and life insurance, and a savings and pension program. Freelancers must provide their own benefits.
