Biomass Power Plant Managers

Outlook

The renewable energy industry is still developing and the biomass power plant manager role is a relatively new and emerging occupation. Job opportunities for industrial production managers are expected to increase about as fast as the average for all careers through 2032, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. But opportunities for plant managers in the biomass sector will not be as strong. "Biomass power producers have endured a rocky road, with their performance heavily influenced by government regulations, market competition, and environmental concerns," according to IBISWorld. The research group reports that "the sector has faced fierce competition from other renewable sources like wind and solar power. Revenue has been decreasing at a compound annual growth rate of 4.5 percent over the past five years to total an estimated $838.7 million in 2024."

In the long term, demand should increase for biomass power. Interest in securing alternative energy sources that are fuel-efficient, environmentally sustainable, and affordable is expected to continue, in an effort to reduce U.S. reliance on foreign fuel. But funding for research and development of renewable energy sources such as biomass will vary depending upon federal budgets.

Biomass power plant managers with a bachelor's degree or higher, several years of previous work-related experience, and certification in industrial management or quality control will have the best chances of securing work.
