Certification or Licensing

The following voluntary specialty certifications are available from the Board of Pharmacy: Ambulatory Care Pharmacy; Cardiology Pharmacy; Compounded Sterile Preparations Pharmacy; Critical Care Pharmacy; Emergency Medicine Pharmacy; Geriatric Pharmacy; Infectious Diseases Pharmacy; Nuclear Pharmacy; Nutrition Support Pharmacy; Oncology Pharmacy; Pediatric Pharmacy; Pharmacotherapy Psychiatric Pharmacy; and Solid Organ Transplantation Pharmacy. Pharmacists are required to be licensed in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and all U.S. territories. Applicants for licensure must have graduated from an accredited pharmacy program, completed an internship under a licensed pharmacist, and pass the North American Pharmacist Licensure Exam (which is designed to evaluate general practice knowledge) and the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Exam (MPJE), which assesses one’s knowledge of the application of laws and regulations for their specific states/jurisdictions. If recent graduates do not take the MPJE, they must take a state-specific test on pharmacy law.
