Informatics Nurse Specialists

Outlook

The outlook is bright for informatics nurse specialists. Demand is expected to be strong in the years to come for these specialists due to the growth of electronic health record use, e-prescriptions, and other health care information technologies. Computer systems analysts in general will have good employment opportunities, about 9 percent growth through 2028, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). The DOL says that "computer systems analysts will be needed to accommodate the anticipated increase in the use and implementation of electronic health records, e-prescribing, and other forms of healthcare IT." The health care industry is expected to experience strong growth through 2028 also. The DOL predicts 14 percent employment growth for health care occupations, which is much faster than the average for all industries. This growth will be attributed to the increase in the aging population; as more people live longer lives, more health care services will be needed. Informatics nurse specialists with an advanced degree, certification, and prior work experience will have strong employment prospects.
