History

The first reconstructive surgery using skin grafts was recorded by the Indian physician Sushruta around 750–800 B.C. The ancient Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks also used skin grafts, but it appears that this medical knowledge was lost during the Middle Ages. Physicians began experimenting again with skin grafting in the early 19th century.

The field of regenerative medicine did not blossom until the 20th century. The first successful human organ (kidney) transplant occurred in 1954, and the first successful bone marrow transplant between two humans was completed in 1956. By the late 1960s, pancreas, liver, and heart transplants were successfully performed. Other regenerative medicine milestones include:

  • the discovery of stem cells in human cord blood (1978)
  • the first engineered tissue (skin) transplantation (1981)
  • the first laboratory-grown organ, an artificial bladder (1999)
  • mapping of the entire sequence of the human genome (2005)
  • the discovery of stem cells derived from amniotic fluid and placenta (2007)
  • the first solid organ engineered by recycling a donor liver (2009)
  • the discovery of the CRISPR Genome Engineering Tool (2012)
  • the approval of the first human trials for CRISPR (2018)
  • the first approved CRISPR-based medicine (Casgevy) for curing sickle cell disease (2023).

The Food & Drug Administration has approved regenerative medicine therapies for the treatment or correction of certain immunological, hematological, oncological, dermatological, ophthalmological, dental, orthopedic, and neurological diseases and conditions.

Demand for regenerative medicine specialists will remain strong due to the aging U.S. population (which typically requires more healthcare services than younger populations do), an increase in the incidence of chronic diseases among many populations, and technological advancements in tissue engineering as well as stem cell and gene therapies.
