Addiction Therapists

Advancement Prospects

An addiction therapist who is a salaried employee can advance by receiving pay raises, bonuses, or other forms of increased financial compensation. A therapist who is self-employed can expand his or her practice, which may translate into higher earnings. Some therapists become well-known in their fields and write books and journal articles and/or become media experts regarding addiction-related issues. Others teach at colleges and universities. Some addiction therapists choose to pursue advanced education to become psychologists (which requires a doctoral degree in psychology) or psychiatrists (which requires a medical degree and the completion of a residency).
