Employment for all aerospace engineers is projected to increase by 6 percent from 2024 to 2034, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. This is faster than the average (3 percent) for all careers. Revenue in the global space economy reached $570 billion in 2023, according to the Space Foundation. “Future projections suggest that the global space economy may grow to as much as $2 trillion by 2040,” according to “Commercial Trends Redefining the Future of Space” from the professional services firm PwC. “While government spending in the sector continues to grow, private companies are expected to take the lead, driving innovation through increased investment and strategic collaboration between commercial and government entities.” Commercial revenues account for nearly 80 percent of industry activity. PwC identified the following “emerging opportunities in a trillion-dollar space economy”: orbital construction and in-space manufacturing, lunar resource extraction, artificial intelligence and robotics, space-based energy production, and launch rideshare and space trucking.
