Build Reliability Engineers

The Job

Job responsibilities for build reliability engineers vary by their employer, the type of aerospace technology being designed and manufactured, and the engineer’s level of experience and their academic background, among other factors. But most engineers participate in preliminary design reviews and critical design reviews to ensure that the design meets product development parameters such as design for quality and design for manufacturability. They identify risks associated with the designs and the manufacturing materials and techniques that are used and suggest ways to make the design safer and/or more efficient. Engineers also take the same steps if a spacecraft or other space-related technology is being refurbished or otherwise improved. They collect and study large amounts of data, as well as engage in nondestructive and other types of testing to test manufacturing materials, a part or system’s performance under various conditions, and other technology-related issues.

If a part or system fails or otherwise malfunctions during testing or manufacturing, or after launch, the engineer conducts a root cause investigation to identify and mitigate the cause of the issue to improve reliability. They also ensure that controls are in place to prevent a recurrence of the issue.

Other important tasks for build reliability engineers include writing reports and giving presentations about their work; reviewing engineering work orders, specifications, and product documentation for accuracy, quality, completeness, and regulatory compliance; participating in continual improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives; and developing criteria and practices to identify process weaknesses.
