Digital Identity Managers

Experience, Skills, and Personality Traits

Aspiring managers will need to obtain five to seven years of experience in a lower-level digital identity position such as digital identity analyst, architect, or engineer.

Digital identity managers need both technical expertise and knowledge and a variety of soft and personal skills to be successful on the job.

Managers must be familiar with best practices and compliance standards, understand how to implement secure authentication methods and protocols, have knowledge of dynamic and high-level languages such as PowerShell or Python, and have experience with SQL databases and identity and access management tools. They also must stay abreast of emerging technology—such as the Internet of Things, cloud computing, blockchain technology, biometric authentication, cryptography, and advanced artificial intelligence—and understand how each type can be used in their field.

Digital identity managers need to be decisive, highly organized, and have strong leadership, project management, and time management skills. They also must be good problem-solvers, have excellent troubleshooting abilities, possess creative vision, and be able to work well under pressure. Digital identity managers need superior communication and interpersonal skills in order to explain complex security concepts to non-technical colleagues and other stakeholders and work effectively with colleagues. Strong writing skills are also important because managers write reports and other correspondence.
