Digital Identity Managers

History

Protecting and managing digital identities has been important ever since the first person or group posted personal or otherwise sensitive data in digital realms and people began to use technology for business and personal purposes. But advances in technology, especially those that capture large amounts of data and that allowed many people to view other people’s data, created a need for specialized workers who could manage and protect the digital identities of people and organizations. As a result, the career of digital identity manager emerged in the past 20 years or so to better protect data and reduce damage caused by data breaches, misuse of digital systems, and other digital challenges. The Identity Management Institute was founded in 2007 to represent the professional interests of digital identity workers.
