High School
Take as many computer science classes as possible—especially in software development, programming, data science and analytics, database management, and cybersecurity. Other recommended courses include mathematics, business, English, writing, and speech.
Postsecondary Education
Most ETL developers have bachelor’s degrees in software development or engineering, programming, computer science, information technology (IT), or a related field. Students augment their training by participating in internships and other experiential opportunities at companies, nonprofits, and government agencies that employ ETL developers or use ETL applications. Those interested in becoming lead developers or managers often earn a certificate in business or IT management or a master’s degree in one of these fields.
Certification
The International Web Association provides a variety of IT-specialist certificates that will be of interest to all types of software developers. Colleges and universities offer a variety of certificate programs (which typically last from six months to a year) in software development, data management, and related fields. Some schools offer ETL-focused classes as part of business intelligence and data science certificate programs. Other Education or Training
Online learning platforms (OLPs), colleges and universities, and professional associations provide in-person and online courses, workshops, and webinars.
