Job opportunities for software developers are expected to increase by 17 percent through 2033, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. This is much faster than the average for all careers. Employment for database administrators and architects is expected to grow 9 percent during this same period, which is also much faster than the average.

The amount of data generated each day is mind boggling—especially due to the emergence of the Internet of Things (which gathers sensor, mobile geolocation, video feed, product usage, social media, and other types of data through connected devices). There will be increasing demand for ETL developers due to the growing use of IoT data; the increased use of artificial intelligence (including machine learning) to more effectively sort, evaluate, and use data; and continuing concerns about data security. The professional services firm Deloitte says that future ETL solutions “will be scalable, versatile, high-performance, and flexible in order to be able to support the data-driven business initiatives and imperatives.” ETL developers who are certified and who stay up to date with emerging technology and data collection, organization, transfer, and analysis methods will have the best job prospects.
