Directors of Security

Employment Prospects

Employers

Directors of security work for companies in the public, private, and government sectors of every industry including hospitality, retail, aerospace and defense, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, business services, chemicals, construction, education, insurance, the Internet, media, information technology, and transportation. Each sector presents different challenges, but the basic principles of good security are often the same. Jobs can be located throughout the country and are available not only in commercial businesses but public venues, such as arenas and theaters; transportation facilities, such as train stations and airports; government agencies; and even personal residences of wealthy individuals.

Starting Out

The position of director of security is not an entry-level job. Candidates generally must have many years of experience and a proven track record of success. Aspiring directors of security who don’t yet have a lot of experience often find it easier to gain employment at a smaller company in lower-level security positions. Many start out as security guards before moving into supervisory positions and starting to work their way up the career ladder.
