Forensic Meteorologists

Certification, Licensing, and Special Requirements

Certification or Licensing

Many forensic meteorologists earn the certified consulting meteorologist (CCM) certification, which is awarded by the American Meteorological Society (AMS). While certification is voluntary, it is almost a prerequisite in a field in which one is frequently asked to present expert opinions in court and in other legal proceedings. Applicants for the CCM program must meet educational requirements, have a minimum of five years of work experience at the professional level in meteorology or in a related field, and pass an examination. Visit https://www.ametsoc.org for more information.

The AMS also offers the certified broadcast meteorologist and certified AMS teacher credentials, and the National Weather Association offers the Weathercaster Seal of Approval.

No licensing is required to work as general meteorologist or in the specialty of forensic meteorology.
