Forensic Meteorologists

Experience, Skills, and Personality Traits

Forensic meteorologists have extensive experience in traditional meteorology and augment this experience by taking classes and participating in workshops that focus on forensic meteorology.

Successful forensic meteorologists have excellent observation, research, and analytical skills; are intellectually curious and enjoy solving problems; and have strong ethics and personal integrity. They must be excellent communicators to be able to write clear and concise reports that convey their findings, as well as testify in court; be able to break down complex scientific terminology and weather events so that judges, juries, and attorneys can understand complex meteorological terminology and conditions; and be able to work under pressure and stay calm under sometimes harsh questioning by attorneys in court. Forensic meteorologists increasingly need computer skills in order to use atmospheric modeling programs and utilize software to create simulations of past weather events.
