High School
In high school, take a college preparatory curriculum that features courses in mathematics, geography, computer science, physics, earth science, and chemistry. Forensic meteorologists need superior communication skills, so be sure to take as many classes in English, speech, and writing as possible.
Postsecondary Education
You will need at least a bachelor’s degree in meteorology to become a meteorologist. Typical classes at this level include Introduction to Meteorology, Physical Meteorology, Weather Analysis, Climatology, Satellite and Radar Forecasting, Thermodynamic Meteorology, Synoptic Meteorology, Mesoscale Meteorology, and Dynamic Meteorology. Those who work in research positions need a master’s degree or a Ph.D. Forensic meteorologists have degrees in meteorology, as well as complete extensive coursework in forensic science, forensic meteorology, and related fields that are offered by colleges and universities, professional associations, and other entities. Training to become a meteorologist is also offered in the military.
The National Weather Service offers information about educational programs and careers in meteorology and atmospheric sciences on its Web site, https://www.noaa.gov/nws-careers.
Certification
There are no certificate programs in forensic meteorology, but there are many types of meteorology certificate programs that students and current meteorologists can complete to improve their knowledge in specialty areas. There are also general forensic science programs that will be useful. Contact colleges and universities in your area for more information.
Other Education or Training
The National Weather Association offers continuing education (CE) opportunities at its annual conference. Past sessions included The Art and Science of Forensic Meteorology and Career Opportunities as a Consultant. The American Meteorological Society, Association of Certified Meteorologists, and organizations at the state and local levels also provide CE classes and workshops. Contact these organizations to learn more.
