Technical support has been around since the development of the first computers. But it has only been in the last 35 years that help desk representatives and other support specialists have become an integral part of the computer and information technology (IT) industries. In an attempt to gain customer loyalty, more computer and IT companies are offering free or reasonably priced technical support as part of the purchase package. Additionally, the number of home computer users with support issues has skyrocketed over the past decade. Technological innovations and the variety of hardware, software, and online services available to businesses and consumers have also created strong demand for help desk representatives. The growing use of chatbots powered by artificial intelligence will automate some support tasks, which may reduce demand for help desk representatives over the long term.
