Medical Robotics Technicians

Education and Training Requirements

High School

To prepare for postsecondary training, take courses in shop, mathematics (e.g., algebra, trigonometry, calculus), physics, engineering, computer science (e.g., AI, computer programming and software development, computer-aided design), English, and speech. Take business, accounting, and marketing courses if you plan to start your own company.

Postsecondary Education

Many medical robotics technicians have associate’s degrees in robotics, biomedical engineering technology, mechanical engineering technology, electronics, electrical engineering technology, or a related field.

Some medical robotics technicians train for the field by participating in a Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP). RAPs are available for robotics technicians; mechanical, industrial, electro-mechanical, mechatronics, and electrical and electronics engineering technologists and technicians; and other careers. The Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation offers a Biomedical Equipment Technician Apprenticeship Program, a two-year hybrid program that combines education and up to 6,000 hours of paid, on-the-job, competency-based learning. Apprentices receive training in eight main competency areas: Hospital Orientation and Health Care Safety, Anatomy and Physiology, Mathematics, Electronics, Biomedical Equipment Technology, Information Technology, Communication Skills, and Professional Skills. Those who complete the program receive three industry-recognized credentials: certified associate in biomedical technology, information technology fundamentals, and certified biomedical equipment technician-candidate status. Certification

Colleges and universities offer certificate programs in robotics, robotics engineering technology, robotics and intelligent systems, and related fields. For example, Duke University offers a graduate certificate in medical robotics to students who complete the following classes: Introduction to Medical Robotics and Surgical Technologies; Medical Robotics and Surgical Technologies Team Project; one machine learning course; and one elective course.
