Metaverse Developers

High School

In high school, learn as much as you can about computer science, programming, and technology (e.g., AI, AR, VR, MR, blockchain technology, cryptocurrency) inside and outside the classroom. Join computer science and technology clubs to obtain hands-on experience. Other recommended courses include art, mathematics, psychology, English, writing, and speech.

Postsecondary Education

Metaverse developers typically have bachelor’s degrees in a wide range of fields, such as computer science, software development, artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, human-centered design and engineering, interaction design, and interactive media. Others have degrees or complete minors or academic concentrations in VR, AR, MR, or blockchain technology, among other fields.

Certification

Many colleges and universities offer certificate programs in interaction design, interactive media, and software development, as well as the technologies (e.g., AI, VR, blockchain) that form the basis of the metaverse. For example, the University of Michigan offers a graduate certificate in extended reality. Students must complete Introduction to AR/VR Application Design, several elective courses (e.g., Developing AR/VR Experiences, Immersive Urbanisms: Technopolitics of Metaverse, Advanced Visualization), and an extended reality project. Other Education or Training

Continuing education seminars, webinars, and other learning opportunities are provided by professional associations, colleges and universities, tech companies, and for-profit online learning platforms (OLPs). Contact these organizations for more information. For example, Meta (through the OLP Coursera) offers What is the Metaverse? and other courses. The VR/AR Association offers webinars such as Perspectives of the Metaverse in the Healthcare Area; Bridging Physical and Virtual Worlds; and Building the Enterprise Metaverse.
